Volunteering in Wide Bay

The following information recorded in the 2016 ABS Census, gives an indication of the helping hand spirit in our region. Persons undertaking voluntary work for an organization or group (formal volunteering), shows that in 2016, 19.3% of the total Population participated in formal volunteering, just down from the 19.6% in 2011. This is comparable to the Queensland average for 2011 of 18.7% and 18.8% respectively. The percentage of people providing unpaid care, help or assistance to others in 2011, was 12.8% and this increased slightly to 13.3% in 2016, slightly above Queensland average of 10.2% and 10.7% respectively.
In 2016, there were 109 362 households in the Wide Bay, up slightly from 2011 with 104,327. These represent just over 7% of all Queensland households 1,547,304 in 2011 and 6.3% of 1,656,831 in 2016. The tenure type in the Wide Bay in 2011 was almost evenly split with 40% owning their home outright, a third having a mortgage and a third were rented. This remained steady in 2016. That was the opposite for Queensland, with the 28% owning outright, 33% having a mortgage and 34% renting. The average monthly mortgage payment in Wide Bay area was $1,419 compared to Queensland's average of $1,892 in 2016 and the average monthly rent was $1,075 up compared to the Queensland average of $1,452.
In 2016 the Wide Bay had 287,883 people living in the region. That’s 5.8% of Queensland's total population of 4,928,457. The Median age in Wide Bay is 45.7 compared to 37 for all of Queensland and there were slightly more men than women. There were more men in the 65-69 age bracket than any other and the majority of men over the age of 40. As for women, the biggest age bracket was the 65-69 year olds, with most of the women over 40 year of age. The total number of families was 77, 542 (6.3% of Queensland total) in the Wide Bay and 1, 221, 148 in Queensland, with the average family size being 2.4 people per household, compared to 3 per household as the Queensland average.

Fraser Coast Volunteering

According to the 2016 ABS Census, gives an indication of the helping hand spirit in our the Fraser Coast. In that region, 16.4% of of the population, were undertaking voluntary work for an organization or group (formal volunteering), just down from the 17.2% in 2011. This is comparable to the Queensland average for 2011 of 18.7% and 18.8% in 2016 The percentage of people providing unpaid care, help or assistance to others in 2011, was 12.9% and this increased slightly to 12.9% in 2016, slightly above Queensland average of 10.2% and 10.7% respectively.
In 2016, there were 21, 913 homes in Hervey Bay. The tenure type in the Hervey Bay in 2011 was almost split with just below 40% owning their home outright, just above 30% were renting and about 25% having a mortgage. This remained steady in 2016. That was the opposite for Queensland, with the 28% owning outright, 33% having a mortgage and 34% renting. The average monthly mortgage payment in Hervey Bay area was $1,542 compared to Queensland's average of $1,892 in 2016 and the average monthly rent was $1,243 up compared to the Queensland average of $1,452.

The Median age in Wide Bay is 47.5 compared to 37.5 for all of Queensland and there were slightly more women than men. There were more men in the 65-69 age bracket than any other and the majority of men over the age of 40. As for women, the biggest age bracket was the 65-69 year olds, with most of the women over 40 year of age. The total number of families was 15, 693 (1.3% of Queensland total) in the Gin Gin and 1, 221, 148 in Queensland, with the average family size being 2.7 people per household, compared to 3 per household as the Queensland average.
